The difference between GPS, RFID and RTLS


It can be difficult to tell the difference between these three acronyms, so let's start with their full names:

GPS- Global Positioning System
RFID- Radio Frequency Identification
RTLS- Real-Time Location System

All three of these technologies can and are used as location-based solutions. Which one to use depends on the industry you are in and area you are looking to cover. When sifting through the Ekahau blog, I came across a short, concise table describing the main differences:

GPS
RFID (Passive)
RTLS
  • Outdoor location tracking technology for global tracking
  • Electronic identification technology that uses small, inexpensive, passive tags
  • Active tags are used for locating high-value assets and people in real time, enterprise-wide
  • Accuracy: 10+ meters
  • Accuracy: Only locatable next to RFID reader gates
  • Accuracy: Typically from sub-1 meter to 3 meters. Depends on WiFi infrastructure in place.
  • Usage: Smartphone consumer apps, car navigator
  • Usage: Warehousing, retail, other logistic
  • Usage: Asset management, staff safety, patient / consumer tracking. Mostly in healthcare

IW Partner With Trans Data Management

As mentioned previously, Integrated Wireless (IW) have signed a new partnership with TransData Management Ltd (TDM) to exclusively distribute their rail solutions Australia-wide.

Recently, IW Sales & Marketing Director Feargal O'Farrell and Sales Executive Luke Boicos travelled to London to meet with the TDM team in order to discuss rail solutions in detail, as well as opportunities in the Australian marketplace.

Infant Abduction in Auckland

According to The Aucklander, an 11-day-old baby was snatched from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Auckland Hospital just under 2 weeks ago. The Police sent out a public alert for any information regarding the baby the night of the abduction, with a tip-off from a member of the public coming the following morning.

"Jacob has been found along with his mother. The baby was alive and well when police officers arrived," said Northern Police Communications spokesman Inspector Peter Raynes. The investigation team are assessing whether to press charges.

Luckily this situation had a positive outcome with no harm caused to the infant. Unfortunately, there are many cases where the result is quite the opposite, amounting to indescribable grief for families and a bad reputation for those hospitals involved.
