Wandering Patient Solutions

There are often articles published around dementia patients wandering from nursing homes. These articles discuss the circumstances surrounding the disappearance but rarely do we get insight as to why the person absconded in the first place. Most of the time, the wanderer's failing memory and inability to communicate make it impossible for them to explain why they left and how they got to their destination (fightdementia.org.au).

According to the above source, there are 11 main reasons dementia sufferers wander off-site:
  • Changed environment
  • Loss of memory
  • Excess energy
  • Searching for the past
  • Expressing boredom
  • Confusing night with day
  • Continuing a habit
  • Agitation
  • Discomfort or pain
  • A job to perform
  • Dreams

We, Integrated Wireless (IW), have made it our mission to prevent the situation occurring in the first place. IW partner with Secure Care to provide wandering resident solutions focused on proactive planning rather than reactive response.

RFID receivers are placed above every door within the facility which receive data transmitted from a tamper-proof wrist band worn by the patient. When that patient passes by a receiver on the way to the exit, the door will automatically close and a message will be automatically sent to staff to notify them of the situation.
